Sodaji Khenpo: If you do not rely on external enemies to harm, can you also cultivate the paramita of patience?

Question: If you do not rely on external enemies to harm, can you also cultivate the paramita of patience?

Khenpo Sodaji: Let’s read the biographies of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and eminent monks and great monks, and find examples of cultivating patience without relying on the anger of enemies. This is probably not possible.

《There is a case in "The Blue Lion in Snow Mountain": There was a practitioner in Tibet who practiced Mahayana Buddhism. For a period of time, he had the intention to practice forbearance to cure his particularly strong anger and troubles.

He made a great decision and found a cave on the mountain. He had been practicing his "forbearance" for many years. Later, a master learned about this and made a special trip to the mountain to visit the practitioner who lived in the cave. After meeting, he had some conversations with each other. The practitioner also talked about his experience of practicing "forbearance" for many years. The master quietly listened to his words and said, "Oh, poor man, you have gone astray. How can you have any effect when you practice for the paramita of forbearance in this environment?" The practitioner was immediately angry when he heard this sentence: "Ah, I have practiced asceticism on the mountain for so many years, and you dare to say that it is useless..." "Now look at yourself, is this the verification of your years of practice?" The master's words directly hit the practitioner, causing him to finally wake up from his confusion.

Although the damage to enemies and enemies makes us beginners uncomfortable, this is a necessary factor in the development of merit of tolerance, just like to cure your own diseases and strengthen your physical condition, you must take some bitter medicine.
