India proposes to provide special drug capsules for vegetarians

Vegan News 2017-07-01

According to a report by the Times of India on June 28, the Indian government is considering a proposal to replace animal gelatin with plant cellulose to produce capsule shells, which is intended to provide more options for vegetarians.

The proposal has reportedly received initial approval from India's top drug regulator and has now been referred to the Scientific Committee by the Federal Ministry of Health. The Ministry of Health will make the final decision based on the recommendations of the Scientific Committee.

"We want to be 100% safe and efficient with plant cellulose, because gelatin has been used for many years. So, we sent all the scientific literature and data to the scientific committee, and the committee's recommendations may ultimately decide whether the proposal is approved or not, after all, it has been approved by the Drugs Control Authority of India. A senior Ministry of Health official said.

Gelatin is reported to be made from the bones, skin, and tissues of processed cows, pigs, and other animals. In addition to pharmaceuticals, gelatin is also used as a gelling agent in food products and cosmetics.

Regulators have held discussions that have incorporated input from stakeholders, including the pharmaceutical industry and consumers. The proposal, which was sent to the Scientific Committee for evaluation, included these comments and relevant data, and although it was supported by various parts of the government, it was still strongly opposed by the pharmaceutical industry due to the increase in estimated manufacturing costs.

However, officials say that existing pharmaceutical technologies do not make production too expensive, and this proposal does not force companies to produce vegetable capsules. The idea is only to provide consumers with more choices, especially if the level of technology has already met the production conditions. (Internship compiler: Zou Min Reviewer: Tan Liya)
