The new vegan restaurant takes over Toronto's old seafood restaurant

Vegan News 2020-09-28

The founders of vegan restaurant company Planta Restaurants recently transformed Toronto's Chase Fish & Oyster restaurant into Planta Cocina, a new plant-based Mexican concept. Downtown Toronto's restaurant space features a spacious 60-seat restaurant with vegan leather seats and a 10-seat bar and lounge area. Co-founder and Executive Chef David Lee has crafted a menu featuring appetizers and salads, such as black bean taro, watermelon, and pea salad. Larger products, such as porami tingo tortillas and wild mushroom tamales; and desserts such as tres leches trivia and corn pudding with strawberry ice cream. Guests can also order plates full of nachos, including a portion of the proceeds to go to racial justice organizations Black Lives and Black Women in Motion. The full cocktail list features classic margaritas and kombucha mojitos.

Steven Salm, co-founder and president of Planta Restaurants, told VegNews. "The benefits of plant-based dining include a greater commitment to sustainability, and it also enables greater transparency across the food chain, providing people with a healthier, more intimate lifestyle. We have to learn how to live in the current environment with insufficient attention to health and wellness. Planta Cocina is Toronto's fifth plant-based restaurant operated by Planta Restaurants, which includes Planta, Planta Queen, and Planta Burger. In the United States, the company has Planta Miami in Florida and plans to open a restaurant in New York City in the coming months.
