KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut launch products other than burgers in China

Vegan News 2020-06-08

This month, fast-food chains KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut are adding plant-based Beyond Meat to their menus in select locations in China. Yum China Holdings - The parent company of these three chains in China and the licensee of Yum! Brands - Plant-based burger patties will be launched to test to determine consumer demand. Joy Wat, CEO of Yum China, said: "We see great potential in China's plant-based meat market.

The latest introductions of the KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell brands are expected to garner valuable consumer feedback in different parts of China. This will allow us to optimize flavors and processes and help evaluate the potential for large-scale rollout in the future. This exciting development is the latest iteration of our ongoing commitment to bringing innovative products to Chinese consumers.

At Taco Bell, the Beyond Burger will be used as the base for tacos, which will be available at three locations in Shanghai from June 3 to June 10. Pizza Hut will launch its first burger combo (available from June 8 to June 11) with two burgers: one made with Beyond Burger pies and the other with animal beef. At KFC, Beyond Burger (with dairy toppings) will be available for three days starting June 3 at five locations in Beijing, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Shanghai. KFC China had previously tested plant-based chicken nuggets made by agribusiness Cargill in three locations in April: Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

In Shanghai, vegan blocks sold out within an hour, and 7,000 copies were purchased during the trial period. Ethan Brown, Founder and CEO of Beyond Meat, said: "This launch is excited about our collective efforts to serve Chinese consumers as they seek the nutritional and environmental benefits of our delicious plant-based meat, and overall, our partnership with Yum China, as well as iconic brands of KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, is an encouraging and important milestone in making our plant-based meat more accessible globally.

In the U.S., Beyond Meat has partnered with Yum! The brand tested Beyond Fried Chicken at a KFC site in Atlanta last August — selling out vegan chicken in less than five hours, prompting KFC to expand its options to nearly 70 testing sites in Charlotte, North Carolina, Nashville, Tennessee, and its surrounding areas in February.
