A study by the Sleep Research Centre of the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom showed that staying up late may affect genes and lead to health problems in the human body.

The researchers recruited 22 healthy volunteers in their twenties and created a 28-hour living environment in the laboratory. As a result, the volunteers fell asleep four hours later than normal and slept for 12 hours a day.

Researchers took blood samples from volunteers and found that the number of genes that exhibit circadian rhythms in the volunteers was only one-sixth of the usual number.

Dirk-Jan Dyck, a professor at the research center, wrote in a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences: "6% of genes have circadian rhythms, which means they are more active at a particular time of day. ”

The British "Daily Mail" quoted Dyck as saying on the 20th that there are about 24,000 genes in the human body, and this study shows that more than 1,400 genes are susceptible to changes in sleep patterns.

Existing studies have shown that irregular sleep habits caused by staying up late or often falling jet lag can lead to serious health problems and increase the risk of breast cancer, heart disease, diabetes, depression, obesity and stroke.
