Green Consumption - Green Earth - Dr. Lei Jiunan

In the face of changes in the earth's ecology and environment, every person of insight wants to do their best to save environmental pollution. Ecological destruction is directly related to "consumption", because each of us is a consumer, we can do our part to choose a consumer lifestyle that is kind to the natural environment, and at the same time promote the development of "green" business, re-greening the earth, how can consumers effectively improve the environment?

The Union of Concerned Scientists has made a number of recommendations on issues directly related to consumption, which are based on the analysis of all risk factors in the US Environmental Protection Agency and California research reports, and consider the harm to human health and ecology.

The main problems caused by human factors are air pollution, rising global temperatures, changes in the natural ecological environment and water pollution.

Air pollution: The two main types of outdoor air pollutants that are harmful to health are ozone and particulates, which come from the burning of fossil fuels such as gasoline and coal used in power plants. California reports estimate that 3,000 people die each year in California, 60,000 to 200,000 respiratory infections and 2 million wheezing cases among children, and 64,000 deaths across the United States are from pollutants with particles smaller than 10 millimeters.

Other highly toxic air pollutants include pesticide evaporation, emissions from chemical and metallurgical plants, and sewer treatment, and while the actual impact is unclear, the EPA estimates that just 20 unregulated pollutants cause 2,000 cancer cases each year. Acid rain from air pollution kills forests, trees and wildlife, and the water in 1,200 lakes (4% of all lakes) in the United States has become so acidified that it cannot sustain life.

Global temperature rise: Over the past hundred years, the Earth's temperature has increased by an average of 0.5 to 1.1 degree Fahrenheit (Fahrenheit), the melting of glaciers, the rise of sea waters, and others, all of which have clear indicators. Human factors are at the forefront, such as the increase in carbon dioxide, and experts predict that temperatures will rise by several degrees in the coming century. On the surface, a few degrees of temperature may seem small, but the actual impact is significant, such as disturbing the distribution of rainwater falls, rising sea waters, changing coastlines, and disturbing the ecological balance; Impacts on human health include heat stroke, increased air pollution (rising temperatures increase pollutant formation), and contamination of water and food.

Changes to the natural ecological environment: The destruction of the wildlife ecological environment mainly comes from the deforestation, and mining, pesticides, marine fishing, agricultural water use and the expansion of suburban accommodation areas will also disturb and destroy the natural ecology. Wild plants have a valuable role in nature, purifying water and air, preventing floods, purifying pollutants, pollinating crops, and emotionally and comforting human beings.

Water pollution: Some industries still flow toxic chemicals into the water, polluting drinking water and fish, killing plants, the more well-known are mercury, cadmium, heavy metals and chemical pollution produced by the petroleum processing industry, as well as the spraying of pesticides on farmland and home yards, in addition to these pollution, other soil lost from farmland, deforestation areas, and built-up areas to lakes and seas, causing the sun to not be transmitted, resulting in the death of aquatic plants; Water sources are also polluted by the loss of fertilizers and wastewater from animal husbandry.

Effective environmental actions are aimed at improving transportation, food production and household operations.

Traffic countermeasures: 1. Choose a place to live and drive less; Second, think twice before buying a car, it is better not to buy it if you can buy it; 3. Choose fuel-efficient and low-pollution cars; Fourth, reduce travel in a planned way; 5. Walk, cycle or take public transportation as much as possible; Food countermeasures: 6. Eat less meat; 7. Buy organic crops; Family operation: 8. Choose your home carefully, the smaller the better, enough to live, and use insulators on the building, that is, save the cost of air conditioning and heating; 9. Reduce the waste of heating and hot water; 10. Choose energy-saving lamps and electrical appliances; 11. Choose renewable power sources, such as wind, sun, etc. In our daily lives, we not only think about reducing destructive consumption, but also actively encourage "green" businesses and adopt products that are good for the environment.

Now is the time for us to find a solution to the rescue and to take action.
