The foolish minister mistakenly gouged out the eyes of the immortals, and he suffered from both of them

Buddhist stories 2015-12-03

The foolish minister broke the five immortal eyes, and there was no way to hunt for treasure.

Editor's note: This story is excerpted from verse 36 of the Hundred Metaphors Sutra, which is a metaphor for the world's people who have seen the eminent monks who are diligently cultivating in the mountains and forests, and invite him to their homes very respectfully to make offerings, not knowing that doing so will make him unable to work hard, and even destroy his good dharma and precepts, so that he cannot achieve the fruit of the Tao. This is a common mistake and mistake that lay Buddhists often make. The protector of the Dharma does not know the law, the offering is not as good as the law, or the precepts and practice of the great monk with worldly friendship are suffered by both of them, and the fault is great.

[Original text]:

Once upon a time, there was a man who went into the mountains to study the Dao and attained the five immortals. His eyes could see through the heavens, and he could see all the hidden treasures and treasures hidden in the earth. When the king heard this, he was overjoyed and said to his ministers: "How can this person always be in our country and not go anywhere else, so that I have many treasures in my collection?"

There was a foolish minister who always went over, picked out the eyes of the immortals, and brought them to the king, saying, "I can't go because I pick my eyes, and I will live in this country for a long time." Wang Yuchen said: "Therefore, those who are greedy for the dwelling of immortals can see all the hidden things in the earth." Now that you have broken your eyes, what can you do again? ”

【Translation】:

Once upon a time, there was such a man who went up the mountain to practice Taoism and learned a spell that could see all the treasures hidden underground. When this reached the king's ears, the king was very happy when he heard this, and said to his ministers: "I will invite this man to live in our country for a long time, and not let him go anywhere else, so that I may obtain all the treasures hidden underground in the country, and then I will be rich." "At that time, there was a minister who immediately agreed to go to this person who knew magic. Later, he found the man, but instead of inviting the man to the king, he gouged out the man's eyes, took them back and presented them to the king, and said, "I have taken the eyes of this man who understands magic, and now it may be fine if he goes elsewhere." When the king heard this, he said unhappily: "You are really too stupid." The reason I want to invite this man who understands spells is because his eyes can see the treasures buried underground, and you have ruined his eyes now, what use is it!" ”
