沉香不仅是香气沉稳典雅的品香圣品，并且药用价值极高，是我国历史悠久的珍贵中药。
《大明本草》记载，沉香能调中焦之气，补五脏的不足，益精壮阳、暖腰膝，止转筋、吐泻、冷气、破症瘕、湿痹、冷风麻痹、骨节不任风湿、皮肤搔养、下痢。对于五脏，香是很好的补养之剂，其主要功效是调节中焦脾胃的气，理人体中复杂的气机，使五脏调和。
《本草纲目》谓之能冶上热下寒，气逆喘急，大肠虚闭，小便气淋，男子精冷。；

沉香对脾胃调养效果显著
香气入脾，对于消化系统而言，沉香是上好的药材，因为它暖胃通气，所以是温胃行气药当中的极品，它能治一切气氛不调之症，凡是因为气滞所引起的肋间神经痛，胃肠胀痛，呃逆，喘促都可以用沉香末冲服而达至疗效，极为有效。
肠胃的毛病通常是由于肠胃神经不协调而形成的。在中医学上称为肝木克脾土的现象，造成肠胃的消化不良，也就是养分不调而造成的，在急性的肠胃胀痛上，尤其是本来就犯有慢性消化疾病的人，便可以利用沉香的苦辛温性味，达成暖胃温脾，通气定痛的效果了。

沉香气味芳香，主辛散疏通，在温胃行气药中，功效显着。沉香要选择良好品种，煎法甚为重要，油性足，体质重，经精选者为优品。

胃病虚寒，沉香可作为暖胃补益药物，常服能振奋胃部消化吸收机能，增加胃液分泌，促进胃囊运动使炎症消失，配合黄耆、白沭、扁豆、党参，治胃下垂。配合海螵蛸。甘草。白芍，能治胃溃疡。其他类型胃病，配香附、大枣、饴糖调制成丸剂，能健胃养生。

慢性胃炎断出现呕吐呃逆，胸胁闷胀不舒，屁多，用沉香末一钱冲服，每日二次，能行气止呃，或用沉香末五分、紫苏叶一钱，泡茶啜饮，适宜於老年患者。凡膈肌痉挛突然发作时，用沉香末一钱，白豆寇四分冲服。胃部及食道疾病所见之膈肌痉挛，用沉香末八分，加韭菜子三钱(炒透研末)，分三次一日内服完。
