The meaning of precepts is freedom, for example: the five precepts in Buddhism ――Kill, steal, adultery, lying and drinking.I do not kill, respect the freedom of your life;I do not steal, respect your freedom of property;I do not commit adultery, and respect your freedom of reputation;I will not lie, respect your freedom of reputation and credit;I respect your freedom, and of course I am free myself.Therefore, taking the precepts is a kind of respect and freedom.Our family has family rules and a country has national laws. Of course, we believe in a religion and also have precepts.There are precepts for lay people at home, there are precepts for becoming monks, and even different identities: men, women, novice monks, and novice monks all have different precepts.Since the country has established laws, why should religion still have precepts?The law restricts you and forces you from the outside. If you break the law, it will punish you;The Buddhist precepts are not forced, they are willing to do so, and they are the ones who want to observe these pure precepts.One is a requirement from the outside and the other is a requirement from the inner self, which is different.

Mr. Sun Yat-sen once said this: "Buddhism is the mother of philosophy and can make up for the bias of the law.If the law prevents problems from the beginning, it means that the crime has been committed and the law imposes sanctions;Buddhism prevents problems before it happens, which means that there has not been a crime, and Buddhism is of great use.”When traveling around the world, I met some policemen and joked with them, “You are a policeman, I am also a policeman. You policeman, if someone commits a crime, you can punish him;I, a policeman, ask people not to commit crimes. If my strength is not enough and he does not do what I want, then I will do your best.”The precepts are like a teacher, so Sakyamuni Buddha tells us: When I was alive, I was your teacher;After I die, I will take precepts as my teacher.The ring is like a bright lamp. When the light shines on it, I will break the darkness. I will recognize all kinds of things, items, and who is right and who is wrong.The rules are like a track, just like an aviation channel, boats also have sea routes, and highways must also have rules. If you walk according to railways and rules, you will definitely be safe.The ring is like a city wall. I have a barrier to the bad guys and enemies outside, so that they will not invade my safety;The verb is like when we go out for a trip and bring a small water bottle. In the past, the ancients brought a water bag by their side. When they were thirsty, it was like nectar and could nourish us;The precepts are like flowers and garlands, which can make you more solemn and beautiful. The person you keeps the precepts means that you have morality and legitimate rules your physical and mental behavior, and gain the respect of people in the world.Rings are like boats and rafts. We can reach our goals by riding Rings, without being in danger.Therefore, keeping precepts will benefit from all kinds of benefits and no harm at all.

If I break the precepts and admit my mistake, it means that the clothes are dirty and I will wash them with water.I have broken the precepts, so I can repent, so I will restore my purity.Don’t be afraid of breaking the precepts. In Buddhism, some serious precepts are like killing, stealing, adultery and lying. If you want to violate them, it is not easy.The so-called killing ――The most important meaning of not killing is called the Poloyi precept, which is called not killing people.Do you all dare to kill someone?You said that although I don’t dare to kill me, I will kill some small animals, mosquitoes, flies, and mice. Many mosquitoes, ants, and mice are different from killing people. I'm guilty of killing me."I think your sins will be reduced to a very small amount immediately.If you don’t know how to repent, I will kill a cockroach and kill another one;If I beat a mouse to death, I will beat another one to death. I think that sin will be different.The example I often give, for example, a monk should keep the precepts, not drink alcohol or eat meat.But if a monk drinks alcohol and eats meat, we see him: "Oh, this monk has sins."However, this monk was drinking and felt ashamed: "Oh, I am ashamed. I have become a monk, and I still drink and eat meat."This sin may be much smaller;We usually don’t take the precepts, and this wine is “one glass, another glass.”I think it is conceivable who is bigger and smaller in his fault.What I mean is: "Take precepts to make us pure and safe, and it has a great benefit to regulate our body and mind. Don't be afraid of taking precepts."Even if you understand clearly, you would rather break the precepts than take the precepts.You do not take the precepts, you have no salvation, you have no lights, you have no boats and rafts.After you take the precepts, if you break the precepts, you can renew yourself.

If a tiger or lion eats people, it also says: "You are born for us to eat. Do you think it is reasonable?""Some people also say: "Buddhism talks about cause and effect, killing chickens, turning into chickens in the next life, and killing pigs in the next life, then I will kill people, won't I become humans in the next life?"The elephant is called evil view.The Buddhist saying about cause and effect, sin and karma are not the case. If you give me a punch, I will also punch you. If you give me a slap, I will also give you a slap.Its intention, all kinds ofcauseRelationships and complex content cannot be ignored.Someone said again: "What kind of precepts should you take? It's better if your heart is good. If your heart is good, you don't need to take precepts."This is also a wrong view.Since you have a good heart, why don’t you take the precepts?Some people also say, “It is better not to take the precepts than to violate the precepts.“When you take the precepts and break the precepts, it seems that your clothes have stains;You don’t take the precepts, it seems like a linen is dirty. You don’t think it’s dirty, you think it’s natural;If there are stains on the clothes and they feel dirty, the severity is different.There are some monks who are not in accordance with the Dharma, often notPractice、When you walk on the road, you will only beg for alms everywhere.But there are some unreasonable believers who think I am merciful,Give。You also have to say, "A true donor is not afraid of a fake monk."You are not afraid of fake monks, you know that you don’t have any charity and relationships that are not in accordance with the Dharma.Merit,Instead, it is guilty.Therefore, the ignorance in opinion is more serious than breaking the precepts.

In Buddhism, the past precepts, such as the five precepts: killing, stealing, adultery, lying and drinking, not killing, not stealing, not committing adultery, not lying, and not drinking alcohol, seem to be negative. In this world, what you see is a good thing, but it is actually a bad thing;If you say bad things, it is also a good thing.If parents beat and scold their children, and beat and scold their children, this is wrong, but they hope that their children will become successful and give them some education, can you say it is completely wrong?Therefore, it is important to keep the precepts based on wisdom to distinguish right from wrong, good or evil.

This kind of killing with compassion is not a kind of killing with hatred. I think the consequences of this behavior are different.

Once, I went to a small island in a fishing village to establish the Buddha Light Club.Local people say that the Buddha Light Society is established. Buddhism says that we do not kill. We are all fishing here. If we all participate in the Buddha Light Society and do not kill, what should we do if we don’t fish in our lives?When I thought, Oh, this is a serious problem. Isn’t this killing?But for injections and cremation, no one has the will to kill;Buddha saw a cup of water, 84,000 insects, and there were many microorganisms in it. Wouldn’t you kill animals if you drink water?People-oriented Buddhism, all the good and evil that are active in the mind, is a water-dividing relationship.An old monk was surrounded by bandits and wanted to kill all the monks in a temple, but he brought a bowl of meat and said to the old monk, "You are very compassionate. If you eat this bowl of meat, I will not kill these monks.""The old monk did not hesitate and ate this bowl of meat. Can you say that the old monk eats meat with meat?There are many people gathered on a pier, and I want to cross the river and go to the other side to do business.When the boatman came, he pushed the boat on the beach into the water, and some people on the shore got on the boat.There are still some people on the shore, waiting for the next boat to go there.At this time, the people on the shore saw that when the boat was pushing into the water from the beach, it crushed many small fish and shrimps. Among the people on the shore, a scholar said to a monk: Did you see that the boatman pushed the boat down the river and crushed many small fish and shrimps to death. Is this sin the boatman's sin or the sin of the boatman?You all know that this question is difficult to answer.This monk hasZen method,He said, "Scholar, this is your sin."When this scholar heard this, it was outrageous. How could it be my sin?What's the matter with me?This monk said, "Because you meddle in other people's business, you have your sins."Therefore, many things are not completely reasonable and can be explained clearly, and it is also wrong to meddle in other people's business.There is nothing wrong in the world, and mediocre people disturb it.There are many problems in the precepts that are indeed difficult to figure out using ordinary people's knowledge and statements.Therefore, the Indian precepts came to our China, like Zen Master Baizhang, who was extremely smart. He knew that the precepts were difficult to do, so he built temples and established clean rules, and used the clean rules of China to replace the precepts.

There are many traditional precepts that we are worth practicing now.Regarding human Buddhism, we advocate modern precepts, especially the five precepts, killing, stealing, adultery, lying, and wine, which are basically equal to the five Confucian eternal constellations. --Benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, wisdom, and trustworthiness.Not killing is benevolence, not stealing is righteousness, not committing adultery is politeness, not lying is faith, not drinking alcohol is wisdom, and being sober is sober.So we also seem to practice Confucian human thoughts. I also learned from Zen Master Baizhang, using systems to govern temples, and using precepts as the basic (regulation) for personal self-cultivation. For example, now we are completely talking about precepts, like the novice monks. A Buddhist monk has some of them who do not keep gold, silver and treasures and cannot put money on them. We are not walking completely now. We have to take buses, boats, planes, and buy tickets. All precepts are different from the current era, culture, and customs. We should not touch them (precepts), we should supplement them with systems.In the manual "Precautions, concentration and wisdom of the World" that you allocated to you today, on page 16, there is a discussion about the system of Fo Guangshan. I will give you a few examples: First, you cannot beg for alms without permission.Buddhism is OK for begging for alms for public causes, but not for private causes;If you don’t build a temple privately, you can build a temple for the public, not just build a temple privately for yourself;The uncommon money dealing is that I and others, especially believers. I will not lend you money, and you will not lend money to me, because there is no loan, so we can maintain the friendship between our monks and believers.Money is a gift, and if you give alms, it is not mine, and there will be no disputes;Don't have personal contact with believers.The relationship between my believers and I have established a Buddhist relationship.No private relationships.I often see some small monks giving you some small souvenirs, which I give to you.How many relationships have been established in private, and how can we repay them in the future?Like the abbots of various temples in Foguang Mountain, they often have to transfer from this temple to that temple. Since they usually have no personal relationships, it is easy to transfer.If there are too many personal friends, believers often offer biscuits to you, fruits to you, and I offer you red envelopes to you, which is equivalent to the land public. I invest a lot in you, and you suddenly transfer it away. My preferential treatment here will be lost in the future. This is a wrong idea.

You cannot save money privately.You said what my parents gave me and what I had in the past when I was at home?There is a Futianku in our permanent temple. I deposit all the money there. It doesn’t matter if you say hundreds or thousands. No one will ask you for one dollar. That is the permanent temple for you, so it is equivalent to the Sunshine Act, which is open.If you have money to deposit it in the bank, lend it to believers, and collect interest, there will be problems, and that will violate the system of Foguangshan.

Sixth, do not accept disciples privately.Look at Master Cihui and Cirong from Foguang Mountain, they have all become monks for more than fifty years, but they have no disciples.The disciples and disciples always live in the first, second, and third generations... Because if you take the disciple privately and the master does not argue about anything, the disciples will have disputes: this is my master's, and that is my master's... The corrupt atmosphere begins here.

Article 7: Do not sleep in a layman.If you go out, don’t live in a lay house at night, you have to live in a temple.If you don’t have a temple when you go out, you must walk together.

Article 8: No private diet is allowed.If you are sick, what should you eat? We have something to serve you specifically, so you don’t have to cook any soup and medicine yourself, etc.Once I open a private meal, I think the discipline of this group will be difficult to maintain.For example, the elders of Foguang Mountain have been having dinner with the public for decades, and each meal is very simple.In addition, like Fo Guang Shan, those with status and power cannot manage money. Monks who manage money must have low status and no power.Like these many systems of Fo Guangshan, there are also some precepts of human Buddhism that believers should follow, such as the seven-destruction and purity method and the four-verse verses. In our book, everyone will know these when they go back and read them.

Nowadays, precepts are everywhere in China. Generally, those who are at home are actually talking about the Five Precepts, which are for two hours, but now they take five days, mainly to teach you the rules and etiquette.The Bodhisattva precepts at home should be one or two hours, but the precepts in China are spreading, including the five precepts and five days, plus the Bodhisattva precepts, which will take one week.I know that this year, Hangzhou, Taizhou, Jiangsu, and Guangzhou, Guangdong, there are many places that preach the Three Altars of Great Precepts, the Ten Days of Novice, the Ten Days of Monks, and the Ten Days of Bodhisattva Precepts, which takes one month.This is also good. Although it doesn’t take so much time to take the precepts, you have to spend some time learning the meaning, rules and principles of this precepts.Therefore, the ten days of the novice monk's precepts are called beating novice monks, beating and scolding education;When the monks are on the ten days of the precepts, they will kneel on the ground and kneel for several hours;When we arrived at the Bodhisattva precepts, we used to burn the precept scars, but now it has been abolished.Like the most famous one in the past --There is a poem about Baohua Mountain in Nanjing. You must take the Huashan Ring. You can carry the rope with you. You can eat the vegetarian food and eat the stinky pickled vegetables. You can squat on the black ground and worship it. You must take the Huashan Ring. You cannot come if you don’t have a big heart.It is very hard for monks to take precepts. Looking back, when we were young, we sometimes couldn’t sleep even if we could only go sideways inside, so we would not have a good enjoyment.The so-called: sleep auspiciously, lie down and eat fiveVisualize,Wash your face for two and a half hands, and only two and a half pounds of clothes are allowed.Especially when using ruthlessness to sentient beings, it uses ruthlessness to be unrighteous and compassionate;Sometimes when you are unreasonable and reasonable, if you want to reason, he will be unreasonable to you, and you will be able to surrender to the unreasonable. Will you bow your head before the truth in the future?

Regarding the controversy over the precepts, Buddhism in India has created many sects because of different opinions on the precepts. Buddhism came to China for the sake of this precept. Many temples have different opinions.For example, the Theravada Buddhism favors the right shoulder, and the right shoulder is exposed outside. It is OK in tropical places. It is like when you go to China or cold areas, your back will be frozen when exposed outside;If you want to beg for food, there are no Buddhists in this village. How can you live if you can’t hold a bowl?Or the Eight Respects Dharmas, you say that many great nuns, who are knowledgeable, ask her to respect young monks, which is not easy to do.I think although there are many differences, there is no need to argue that this precept is not something that others follow, but it is practiced by myself. I can do as much as I can. However, in Buddhism, there is an important precept called ridicule, which everyone should pay attention to.It means not to let believers ridicule, doubt or dislike us, and this is not the case.

Regarding the cause and process of the Buddha's formulation of precepts.Shakyamuni Buddha once sent his disciple Upoli on a business trip to another place to do business, but Upoli refused the Buddha's order and refused to go.The Buddha asked why not go?He said that it is rainy season now, and after my clothes are wet, I haven't changed them. Because we are only allowed to have this one, it's very uncomfortable to wear raincoats on them, so I don't want to go.The Buddha is also very humane and promised to save a replacement in the future;There is a believer who wants to offer a bowl to Venerable Ananda. Ananda is not at home, and there is no one in this bowl and cannot be separated. For Venerable Ananda, the Buddha is particularly open to Buddhist rules and regulations, and he can have more than one more day in the future;Rahula was very young and went to bed at night, and a poisonous snake was walking beside him. Later, the Buddha found out, "Oh, the little kids should be taken care of by monks, so that monks and monks can live together."For example, many people used to eat, not eat after lunch, etc., and later many disputes arose, which made the precepts very complicated.In short, I mean, we should guard the three karmas of both monks and lay people, whether we are a monk or a monk.So I think the three good exercises advocated by Buddha Light are three precepts, not five precepts. Do good deeds, speak good words, and have good thoughts in your heart. If you can have three good exercises, you are a good person.
