Buddhist Stories: A Collection of Stories of the Hundred Karma Sutras: 15. The Blind

15. The blind

Gouging out the eyes of 10,000 people, all the people who have suffered are blind

When the Buddha lived in the mango orchard in the city of Mutra, there was a wealthy benefactor named Guzi. He lived happily ever after his wife, who was nine months pregnant and gave birth to a blind child. The couple was very painful in their hearts, feeling that it was not easy to have a child, not to mention that they were still blind, so it was better to feed the dogs. So, when no one was seeing at dusk, they quietly left the child on the side of the road.

Observing that the blind baby's causes for being enlightened were ripe and that he could transform more sentient beings through him, he blessed the baby from being eaten by vicious dogs.

Early the next morning, the World-Honored One led the monks to the city of Mutra in a garment and a bowl. The local residents were very surprised to see the monks come here early in the morning, and guessed that there would be a wonderful inscription.

At this point, the Buddha thought, "If this child can remember his past lives and talk to me, it will be of great benefit to all sentient beings." So, with incredible blessings, the Buddha enabled the child to recall past lives and open his mouth to speak to the Buddha.

"Are you 'ugly'?" The Lord asked the baby.

"Yes, I'm 'ugly.'" The child said.

"Do you think the repercussions of the negative karma created by the body, mouth, and mind will ripen? Isn't it painful?" The Lord asked again.

"O Buddha! The negative karma created by the body, mouth, and mind will definitely ripen, and the retribution will be truly miserable!"

"So, what kind of negative knowledge did you take refuge in to form such negative karma?"

"It's not because I rely on bad knowledge, it's because I haven't kept my heart in tune."

When the residents of Mute Le City saw such a scene, their hearts were full of doubts, secretly speculating about the origin of this child, and they all wanted to know who this child was and what kind of past life he had. Why was he able to talk to the Buddha and recall his past lives? In awe of the majesty of the World-Honored One, he quietly asked His Holiness Ananda all kinds of questions in his heart.

"Only the Buddha knows everything, so you should go and ask the World-Honored One." His Holiness Ananda said to them.

"We dare not offend because we are afraid of the majesty of the Buddha. Venerable, can you ask the World-Honored One to teach us on our behalf?"

Ananda replied, "Yes, I will ask the Lord for advice on your behalf."

Ananda then came to the Buddha, bowed respectfully, folded his palms and asked, "World-honored One! Who was this child in his previous life? What kind of karma did he create? Why is he able to remember his past life and speak to you in the body of a baby?"

The Buddha told Ananda, "This child had done great bad karma in his previous life. Once upon a time, the king who ruled the city of Mutle was named "The Ugly Man". He has a very cruel temperament, has a strong sense of jealousy, and strictly disciplines all princesses. When he took the princess on a trip, not only did he not allow others to see the princess's face, but he was not even allowed to open the doors and windows on both sides of the street, and if someone accidentally saw her, he would immediately gouge out the eyes of that person.

Once, he was playing in the park with the princess's relatives. At that time, there was no birth, but there was a single enlightenment who had attained merit and practiced in the mountains and forests. It happened that Dujue had just come out of the mountains and forests and was seen by several princesses. They felt that Dujue's body was solemn and their bodies and minds were soft, so they were extremely happy, and they took off their veils one after another, and ran to Dujue to bow respectfully. When the king learned of this, he was very angry and ordered his men to gouge out Dujue's eyes. Because of the negative karma of his previous life, he was unable to manifest his divine transformation at the moment of his suffering, but then he recovered.

Dujue knew that the king and his gang had created a great deal of bad karma, and in order to save them, he flew into the air and showed fire, hail, lightning and other miraculous changes. Because ordinary people have great faith in God, when the king saw such a scene, he had faith in Dujue, and immediately threw himself on the ground, threw himself at Dujue's feet, bowed respectfully, and repented to Dujue: "Great Venerable, please come down! I have created great negative karma, and I beg you to accept my repentance.'" Then, through this cause, the Buddha manifests nirvana.

Because the king had great faith in Dujue, he made Dujue's ashes into a relict pagoda, made a respectful offering, and made a vow in front of the relic:

"May I not suffer the consequences of the negative karma I have created in this life in my future lives, and may I use my merits of building a pagoda and respectfully offering to Dujue, so that I can live in a rich and noble house for the rest of my life, and I can make the Buddha happy and become an arhat before the Buddha's life, which is more special than Dujue."

What do you think, bhikkhus? The king was the blind child he is now. Because he once gouged out the eyes of thousands of people, and when this bad karma ripened, he went to hell for 500 lifetimes and suffered immeasurably. After liberation from hell, he was reborn as a blind hungry ghost in 500 lifetimes, then as a blind beast in 500 lifetimes, and finally as a blind man in 500 lifetimes."

Bhikshus ask the World-Honored One, "World-honored One! When will this child finish all his suffering?"

The World-Honored One told them, "In the future, when the Heavenly Teacher, Nyorai, and Nyorai are born with enlightened good intentions, this blind person will be reborn as a normal person with sufficient six roots, and under the teachings of Nyorai, he will be able to become a monk and get rid of his afflictions and attain the fruit of an arhat. After the attainment, the worst consequences of his bad karma in his previous life are ripe, and before the karma appears, the crow pecks at his eyes, and with this cause, he manifests nirvana. From now on, I don't have to feel pain again."

After the Buddha finished speaking, all the people present became disgusted with samsara. At this time, the World-Honored One saw that their karma had been able to receive the Dharma, and he taught them the corresponding Dharma. Some of these people have attained the warmth, patience, supremacy and world-class attainment of the preliminaries, some have attained the pre-flowing fruits, the one-time fruits, the non-returning fruits, and the arhat fruits, some have attained the attainments of the Golden Wheel King, Brahma, and Shakti, some have attained the attainment of enlightenment, some have planted the supreme bodhi seed, and many more have developed true faith in the Three Jewels as a result.
