Buddhists must cultivate both blessings and wisdom

Chinese Master 2014-07-10

When the Buddha was alive, he often taught his disciples to practice both blessings and wisdom in order to achieve success. If you only cultivate blessings or wisdom, you will deviate from the right path and will not be able to complete blessings and wisdom.

There were two practitioners of the master who practiced Taoism together, but their own ways of practicing were different. The senior brother heard that those who cultivate blessings will have great blessings in the future, so he specializes in cultivating blessings without paying attention to wisdom; My junior brother heard that those who cultivate wisdom will be very wise, so he specializes in cultivating wisdom and does not pay attention to merit. They each practice in their own way, and the two do not interfere with each other.

Many years later, because my senior brother focused on cultivating blessings, did not read classics, or sought wisdom, when he reached old age, he was unclear about various principles and did not distinguish between good and bad. He was like a stupid wooden man, let alone attaining any fruit. His junior brother believed that wisdom is very important and compared wisdom to human eyes.I think that a person who has lost his eyes must be very dangerous when walking. If a person who practices does not have wisdom, he will often go in the wrong direction.Because he was devoted and only diligent in seeking wisdom, he put the matter of cultivating blessings aside. In the end, because of his diligent practice, he achieved the Arhat fruit. At this time, his senior brother was already old and dead, and he was the only one left, so he left the place where he practiced and prepared to go into the city to educate all living beings in the crowd.

However, he cultivated wisdom but not blessings and traveled many places in the city. When he was hungry, he wanted to beg for alms with others, but no one was willing to offer him.He felt very strange, why did he attain the Arhat fruit, but no one offered to him?He then told everyone in the city that he was an arhat who had attained the fruit, but everyone still ignored him.

Although my junior brother is an arhat who attains fruit, when he is hungry, he feels a little resentful about the fact that everyone refuses to offer to him. Therefore, he wanted to ask the king why his subjects did not even know how to offer the Arhats who attained the fruit.

When he came to the palace, he suddenly saw a white elephant at the entrance of the glorious palace. The elephant was wearing many garlands and orbs, and the elephant was walking around leisurely at the door of the palace, very peacefully. But when my junior brother entered into meditation and observed, he found out that the elephant was reincarnated by his senior brother who specialized in cultivating merits.Because my senior brother used to cultivate blessings but not wisdom, although he was born in the palace in this life, he was just an ignorant elephant.

When the junior brother who had attained the Arhat Fruit saw this situation, he sighed with some enlightenment: "Cultivate blessings but not wisdom, the elephant is wearing a garland; If you cultivate wisdom but not blessings, the Arhat should offer little sacrifices.”

Those who study Buddhism must cultivate blessings and wisdom at the same time. The so-called "both blessings and wisdom" can achieve a perfect, enlightened, happy and happy life.Otherwise, there will be blessings but no wisdom;Or having wisdom but not blessings are all flaws in life.Because, a person who only has blessings but no wisdom, although he lives a happy and prosperous life, he will not be able to deal with others and will be alienated. On the contrary, people who only have wisdom but no blessings understand the meaning of life, but live in poverty and lack of food and clothing, and cannot benefit themselves and others. Therefore, only by cultivating both blessings and wisdom can we continuously improve our personality, benefit the public, and even become enlightened and become a Buddha.
