Master Shengyan: Is there really hell?

Chinese Master 2017-12-07

From the perspective of basic Buddhism, hell and heaven all come from one's own mind. The so-called hell and heaven have spiritual feelings. In terms of retribution, there are also hell, but hell does not necessarily have a practical direction or area.As for the Daoshan, oil pot, Naihe Bridge, and the Ten Palaces of Hell, these are all legends based on folk beliefs.Although the "Ksitigarbha Sutra", "Long Agama Sutra" and the classics describing the saving of Mogalyayana's mother all describe the situation of hell, most of the impressions are slowly evolved in China.

However, the idea of hell is found in the religious culture of many nations. Before Sakyamuni Buddha, there was a saying of hell in India. The Chinese said that "under the nine springs", and that Christianity would go to hell if he didn't go to heaven after death, all believed that he actually existed. In fact, hell is just a state of feeling. It is like when we are having nightmares, it seems like we are in a very terrible place; and when we are having beautiful dreams, it seems like we are in heaven. When dreaming, the consciousness feels this way, let alone the spiritual consciousness after death? Therefore, a state of mental fear and unfreedom is hell. When a person is still alive, these terrifying feelings come from the reaction of the brain nerves. After a person dies, the activity of the brain nerves stops, but the mental state is still there, and these experiences will also be available.

In fact, in our daily lives, we may fall into hell in an instant. When every thought arises, as long as you feel troubled and attached, feeling sad, fear, and pain, it is equivalent to being tortured in hell.If you have serious greed, you will fall into the realm of hungry ghosts; if you have extreme fear, you will fall into the hell on earth; if you feel that you are surrounded by enemies and have a dead end, you will also be at the edge of hell. Therefore, heaven and hell are not in any direction, but in the square inch of our hearts. As long as you are enlightened and not stuck by the troubles and fears of the world, you will be away from hell.
