晚唐之世，世情***，为僧者日众，其中不乏当代之俊彦，以致后世理学家叹道儒门清净，收拾不住，才俊俱入佛门矣！正因如此，佛门高僧辈出，唐代佛教之盛，也着实令人惊叹不已。宗密大师幼禀济世之志，长而弃仕归入佛门，禅教双修，归化于华严，终成一代大家。而大师于初出家时一见《圆觉经》便定终生，以弘扬此经为己任，疏钞洋洋洒洒蔚为大观，为古来《圆觉经》疏家之最。《圆觉经》一典为禅宗、华严学人所奉持，引为本门要典之一。其经之殊胜，广为学人所称道，如《圆觉经要解》〔12〕卷二，于《贤善首章》有一偈颂：是经佛所说，如来守护持，十二部眼目，名曰《大方广圆觉陀罗尼》，显如来境界，皈依增进者，必至于佛地。如百川纳海，饮者皆充满。假使积七宝，满大千布施，不如闻此经；若化河沙众，皆得阿罗汉，不如闻半偈。汝等末世众，护持尽宣说，一圆一切圆，一觉一切觉。可见此经之殊胜，令人闻之心生好乐。大师悲心切切，力弘此经，诚苍生之幸矣！
