Three folk stories written by Ji Xiaolan

Cause and effect 2025-03-15

Cause and effect are the basic laws of Buddhism, which advocate that good and evil karma in this life can lead to good in the future.Bad consequencesRevenge on oneself, in BuddhismGive、Keep precepts, forbearance, diligence,MeditationPrajnaSix degreesParamitaPracticeAll are based on deep belief in cause and effect, but they are different from fatalism. An old saying goes: It’s not that the time has not arrived, and the cause and effect areConceptWe have also long been deeply involved in the traditional Chinese culture of "good-oriented".

One story: Release animals and eliminate karma

Censor Hu Muting said: Someone raised a pig in his hometown. As soon as the pig saw the old man from his neighbor, he would stare and roar, and chase him around and bite him.But I won't see others. The old man was very angry at first and wanted to buy it and kill it to relieve his hatred.Soon he suddenly realized and thought, "This is probably the grudge that was formed in the previous life as mentioned in the Buddhist scriptures? However, there is no irresolvable grudge in the world!" So he bought it at a high price and sent it to the temple as a long-lived pig to feed. After that, when the pig saw the old man again, he leaned his head and approached him affectionately, and no longer looked as fierce as he had seen before.

I once saw a picture of "The Picture of the True and Fuhu".There are also poems written by Li Yan, a native of western Bashu. The general idea is that people with great powers ride on tigers, like steering a good horse. It is not that it is originally tame, but that the power of Tao has resolved its fierceness. From this we can see that between heaven and earth, all sentient beings can become friends, but I hopeAll living beingsBe able to get along with each other sincerely, and do not be afraid of each other and become hostile.

I think this inscription can be used as a circumstance to the story told by Censor Hu.

Story 2: The mercy of the master

There is a nun named Dong in the flower arrangement temple in Cangzhou. At the Christmas time of Guanyin Bodhisattva, she prepared offerings and offered them to the Buddha. After she finished setting up the offerings, she suddenly felt a little tired and leaned on the offerings for a while. In a trance, I dreamed that the Bodhisattva said to her, "If you don't offer me a sacrifice, I won't be hungry either. If you offer me a gift, I will not be full of it.There were four or five refugees outside the temple gate. They couldn't beg for food and were about to starve to death.I hope you will give these offerings to them.It is better to save their lives than to offer me a sacrificeMeritIt's ten times bigger!" The nun suddenly woke up. When she opened the temple door, she saw that there were indeed four or five hungry people, so she gave the offerings to the refugee to satisfy her hunger.

From then on, after she offered sacrifices every year, she gave these offerings to the beggars. She said, "This is what the Bodhisattva means!"

Story 3: Beggar's wife works for filial piety

Dang brother Xusheng said: There is a woman who begs and begs, and she is particularly filial to her mother-in-law.Once, she fell to the side of the road from her hunger, but the bowl of rice she had been begging for was so tight that she refused to let go.She kept muttering, "Mom-in-law hasn't eaten yet!"

Someone came to help her with concern and asked her about her situation. The begging woman said that when she came out to beg for food with her mother-in-law, she just followed her mother-in-law carefully and obeyed her command. One night, she and her mother-in-law curled up under the corridor of an ancient temple to spend the night. In the middle of the night, she heard someone roaring in the hall, "You bastard! Why didn't you avoid that filial woman? She suffered from yin energy, became cold and fever, and was dizzy!" Then she heard another voice defending her: "At that time, I was holding an emergency manifesto in my hand, and I was panicked and didn't see who it was."I heard the previous one's voice even more furious and cursed, "Bastard! All loyal ministers and filial sons have a few feet of divine light shining above their heads. Are you blind and didn't see it?" Then I heard a whip and shouting sound, and it took me a long time to calm down.

The next day, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law came to the village. Sure enough, they heard that a peasant woman was hit by a whirlwind while delivering food to the field. She still had a headache now. When people talk about the peasant woman, they praise her virtuousness and filial piety. The begging woman was deeply moved by this, and since then, she has been afraid of being inadequate in serving her mother-in-law.
