How can we ignore the rights and wrongs, good and evil, and misdeeds of others?

Buddha replied 2024-05-24

People often see others but can't see themselves. Because the self is not contemplating enough, it produces troubles; If we know how to look at ourselves, always reflect on ourselves, and treat others with leniency and self-discipline, when we encounter things, we can switch our position with that of others, and think that if I am him and he is me, then the heart of equality and non-distinction will arise, and we will not be too concerned about right and wrong, good and evil, and misfortune between people and me.

In particular, people who study Buddhism and practice, when getting along with others, "should observe virtue and loss, and follow the obedience and not disobedience", and do not care too much about mistakes when they are optimistic about everything. The so-called "people are not sages, who can be without fault"? What's more, even if we haven't, we sometimes create some misunderstandings, if we only stand in our own position and make improper demands, resulting in the destruction of precious friendship and family affection, it is a pity! Therefore, we can look at the virtues and failures, look at the good side of everything, look at ourselves more, reflect on ourselves more, demand more from ourselves, and don't care too much about mistakes, so we will naturally not be able to see the rights and wrongs and faults of others.

Therefore, how can we not see the right and wrong, good and evil, and misfortune of others? The most important thing is to purify one's heart and one's own perspective. That is, we must have the following eight kinds of minds.

1. Equanimity

It is the undifferentiated mind, for example, the Buddha regarded every sentient being as a Buddha and a Buddha; If we can see all the people in the world as our parents, brothers, and sisters, this is the heart of equality and no difference, and we will not see the faults, good and evil of others. It's like someone else's body has a sore, "It's so dirty!" It's ugly! "You're going to hate it. If you have a sore on your own hand or body, not only do you not dislike it, but you will take good care of it, apply medicine to it, and bandage it, because it is mine. You can look at people and me with an equal heart, and naturally you can't see the rights and wrongs and troubles of others.

2. Compassion

Compassion means: kindness can give goodness and happiness; Compassion can pull out suffering and eliminate difficulties. That is, I am willing to help you get rid of your difficulties, get rid of your pain, and bring you happiness and happiness. If you treat others with this kind of compassion, even if they are not, they will tolerate them with a sense of compassion and compassion. One of the four great bodhisattvas in China, the Great Pessimistic Guanyin Bodhisattva, why do believers happily offer him to the living room of their homes, or set up a Buddhist hall? Why does everyone give up the best part of their home to worship Avalokiteshvara? This is because we need compassion, because Avalokiteshvara is great compassion, and great compassion can be reached everywhere. So, when we have compassion, we are really invincible.

3. Broad heart

It is the heart of tolerance, the so-called "the prime minister's belly can support the boat", the prime minister's mind can tolerate a country and the people, so he can be the prime minister. The mind of a Buddha can contain heaven and earth, which is equivalent to emptiness, so he is a Buddha. Maitreya Bodhisattva has a big belly and can accommodate all things good and bad, so he has a wide heart and a fat body.

4. Empty and heartless

The void can be accommodated, so it can become big. The void is all-encompassing; Our hearts should also be like vanity, regarding right and wrong, good and evil, with an empty mind, and with a vain "nothing" mind, emptying everything. Nothing, it is not to call us nonsense, unintentional is great wisdom and foolishness, and there is greater wisdom in unintentional to embrace everything.

5. Prajna heart

Prajna is the highest intelligence, and the most important thing in studying Buddhism is to develop one's own Prajna intelligence, to use Prajna wisdom to see the world, to deal with the world. For example, with Prajna, one will understand that the Buddha and sentient beings are "two and one, one and not two", that the Buddha is the enlightened sentient beings, and the sentient beings are the unenlightened Buddhas. Although there is a sequence of enlightenment, there is no precedence in the inherent nature of each person. The so-called "equality of birth and Buddha, equality of self and others", if you understand the equality of self and others, you will be able to unify the differences in the world, and you will be able to know people and me from the differences, and you will not see the rights and wrongs and troubles of others.

6. Thanksgiving

The richest people in the world are the ones who are always grateful. If you treat others with gratitude, everyone is a good friend; If you do things with gratitude, you will be a pure land everywhere. For example, thank someone for saying a kind word to me in the past, giving me a smile, nodding at me, shaking my hand. The smiles and actions of others to me are worthy of our gratitude. If so, what is there to dislike others, and what is there to consider?

7. Help the Tao

I should be grateful if others have been kind to me; Even if it is not good, if you regard it as the reverse increase of learning Buddhism, you will naturally not be dissatisfied. If we can further devote ourselves to the truth of the Dharma to others, and help others learn Buddhism and enter the Tao, then we can treat others with the help of the Tao, and naturally we will not see the troubles of others.

8. Cherish the blessings

To cherish one's fortune is to cherish one's own blessings, and to be thrifty and not extravagant and wasteful. Because you have too many material desires to be satisfied, you are prone to jealousy when you see that others are rich. Therefore, if you have to cherish your own blessings, you will naturally be indifferent to materialism, and you will not be able to see the rights and wrongs and troubles of others.

In short, Master Huineng advocated that Zen does not have to sit and participate, but the important thing is to integrate Zen into one's own thoughts and concepts, and into one's own life. Zen can communicate interpersonal relationships, material and self-relationships, Zen can bring us into a world of contentment, happiness and equality, and Zen helps us realize our true self-nature. If we have Zen, we will naturally not see the right and wrong, good and evil of others.
